Chuck DeVore on nuclear energy for California

Jeremy and I took a trip to see Chuck DeVore speak at the Capitol last Wednesday and here is his speech. The topic was nuclear energy.

Very interesting, Rusty. There is a similar debate going on in Saskatchewan right now. We are sitting on a very large percentage of the world's uranium supply- and to date only export it to other places that aren't "too scared" to use it. As he said in his talk- disasters at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island have been blown way out of proportion.
Don't know if you have heard about a current shortage of medical isotopes. From what I understand there are only about three reactors in the world that produce these isotopes- and the one in Ontario has been shut down for maintenance for several months.
Saskatchewan is looking at setting up a reactor to produce these isotopes- an idea that is somehow more palatable to the general public than a nuclear power reactor.

Thanks for visiting my blog Tim. To answer your question about the isotopes, I have only recently heard about the isotope shortage. This speech that Assembly Member Chuck DeVore gave was informative and the Q&A time afterwords was even better. He was asked about what he would do with the "radioactive waste" if he could get this legislation passed. Chuck's response was "radioactive waste is kind of a misnomer." He then began to tell us about how if the byproducts are refined, most of the "waste" actually becomes valuable for future reactor usage or may be used in other fields like medicine. Specifically, he did mention the isotope shortage and how France has become a major supplier of isotope molybdenum-99, which is what produces technetium-99m.

Until I heard him speak, I was unaware of the plethora of misinformation that exists in our societies about nuclear reactors. Thanks for pointing this out because I didn't get a chance to get it on tape that day.
